Steel, Brass & Reclaimed glass Wall

Project Brief

Working with DC based interior designer, Design Milieu, Smith Shop was tasked with designing and creating a glass and metal wall in a loft apartment to separate the entertaining area from a private office. The four panel wall had two fixed panels and two central panels that swung out on custom machined hinges. The left door boasted spring-loaded barrel pins and catch plates to keep the door in place, and the right door was held closed with rare earth magnets. Both doors had custom forged handles and push plates. Brass mullions secured each of the 16 panes of reclaimed chickenwire glass. The ensemble was rounded out with custom forged door stops. The project was located within the Historic Book Cadillac Hotel and work was performed under exacting construction standards. The project received a Detroit Home Design Award in 2020. Smith Shop designed, forged, fabricated, and installed this project.

Large Interior Grille

Project Brief

This nine and a half by four foot interior grille was created for a new construction lake house in suburban Detroit where a large opening helped to bring natural light in a stairwell. The well ordered interior was filled with simple patterns and textures and was complimented by the client’s collection of Asian art. Smith Shop designed a large asymmetrical grille to fill the entire opening that had strong linear and geometric rhythm, showcased the material’s texture, and referenced local lake grasses. The project worked harmoniously with the other interior elements, provided safety, and provided ample natural light. Smith Shop designed, forged, fabricated, and installed this project. The wall mounted hand rails were also made by Smith Shop.
